Who are the Masons?
About the Masons of California
Freemasonry is the world’s first and largest fraternal organization. Named after stonemasons in the Middle Ages who built castles and cathedrals, the fraternity today provides men with opportunities for fellowship, community service, philanthropy and leadership.
Charity is at the heart of most Masonic activities. We believe that each of us has a responsibility to help make the world a better place through community service and support of numerous Masonic philanthropies dedicated to public education, children, and leadership development. Each year, California Masons donate millions of dollars and thousands of hours to philanthropic causes.
There are about 5 million Masons worldwide, including more than 62,000 Masons and about 340 lodges in California. For more information about the Masons of California, please visit freemason.org.
About the Masonic Homes
In 1898, the spirit of Masonic charity and the need to assist the widows and orphans of Masons led to the creation of the Masonic Homes of California.
For more than 100 years, the Masonic Home at Union City has provided compassionate care to California Masons, their wives, widows and mothers. Currently, it provides independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and Alzheimer’s/dementia care to about 300 senior residents.
Today the Masonic Home is also a community partner, teaming up with four public colleges and eight local high schools to offer service learning programs and volunteer opportunities for students. This year the Masonic Homes of California awarded $141,000 in scholarships and, in return, residents of Union City and surrounding communities volunteered more than 23,000 hours of their time to the Home.
Acacia Creek is located on a portion of the Masonic Homes campus and contracts for services from the highly experienced Masonic Homes staff.
