Embracing Happiness

When you think about the times you have expressed happiness, you might envision enjoyable moments you have spent with friends or family members, personal achievements, or experiencing something extraordinary for the first time. But, it’s equally possible to find happiness in everyday life by embracing a positive mindset and making personal happiness a priority.

At Acacia Creek, a Certified Center for Successful Aging, and retirement community, residents and staff focus on achieving optimal health by growing the whole person – intellectually, socially, physically, and spiritually. Happiness touches upon all four of these successful aging components, benefitting both the body and mind. If you’re looking to bring more happiness into your life, here are some tips.

  1. Be flexible. Happy people roll with the punches. They know from experience that everything changes. Today’s good fortune may vanish tomorrow; today’s crises may turn out to be tomorrow’s good fortune.

  1. Take responsibility for your own joy. If you want to experience more happiness in your life, make an effort each day to pursue activities that make you happy. Whether it’s listening to your favorite record, enjoying some sunshine, or calling an old friend who always makes you laugh, take the first step to achieve happiness.

  1. Be grateful. Reflecting upon feelings of gratitude can boost mood. Consider all the things in your life that you are grateful for, being specific. Relish a few moments upon each one and appreciate the good thoughts each of your blessings bring.

  1. Make someone else happy. If you’re struggling trying to make yourself happy, focus on someone else’s happiness instead. Volunteer for a meaningful cause, visit a friend who’s struggling, or write an upbeat letter to a loved ones. The happiness you share will reflect back upon you!
