To Age Successfully, Take a Break

As summer continues to shine on us, you may feel like you’re behind your work-related tasks or progress on your New Year’s resolutions. But rather than keeping your nose to the grindstone, it may be a better option to take the opposite approach. In fact, vacations are an important component of successful aging, particularly for those of us who are currently employed.

At Acacia Creek, a Masterpiece Living Certified Center for Successful Aging, and retirement community, we believe that taking time off from our usual schedules is an important part of all wellness categories – intellectual, social, physical, and purposeful. Here are some of the benefits of taking a vacation.

  • You improve your performance and focus. Vacations give you a mental break, help you return energized with fresh eyes and stronger focus.
  • You boost your heart health and overall well-being. Researchers have shown that people who do not take vacation for one year assume a higher risk of heart disease. Conversely, vacations decrease the risk of depression.
  • You gain new perspectives. Vacations give us an opportunity to gain perspectives on our own lives and others’, help improve our happiness and allow us to build a greater sense of empathy for others.
  • You experience personal growth. As part of gaining a new perspective, vacations give you time to reflect upon your life and identify new avenues for personal and social development.
  • Strengthen bonds with loved ones. Vacations promote shared experiences among family members and friends, helping strengthen bonds, communication skills, and solidarity.

Already used your vacation time for this year and still feeling stressed? Try these successful aging tips for letting go.
