Fitness Is Possible at Every Age

Fitness Is Possible at Every Age

At Acacia Creek, a Masterpiece Living Certified Center for Successful Aging, we encourage our community to enjoy an active and social lifestyle. One of the many unique ways we motivate our community is by debunking common myths and misconceptions when it comes to older adults and fitness; some people are afraid of getting hurt, falling, or being too sore – and others believe it’s too late for them to get in shape. But exercise offers a variety of benefits for people of all ages, regardless of mobility level.

If you’re considering a fitness routine, check out this list of myths and facts.

MYTH: I’m too old to start an exercise program.

FACT: Exercise is important at every age. It improves your mood and memory, and can help prevent falls. It lowers the risk for diabetes, cardiac conditions, colon cancer, dementia, high blood pressure, and obesity.

MYTH: At my age, I’m too weak and frail to exercise.

FACT: Choosing a sedentary lifestyle increases frailty and fatigue, and will make it more difficult for you to live independently as you age.

MYTH: If I exercise and move around too much I may slip and fall.

FACT: Falling is a legitimate concern, but exercise helps prevent falls by building your strength and improving balance, agility, and coordination.

MYTH: I cannot walk, so there is no way I can exercise.

FACT: There are many ways to exercise while seated, including using bands or light weights, or participating in “sit and be fit” classes. For ideas, refer to the National Institute on Aging.

MYTH: I am too old to build muscle mass.

FACT: This is not true! We naturally lose muscles as we grow older, but working out with small weights or resistance bands can help rebuild these muscles, making everyday tasks much easier.

No matter your age, when it comes to fitness, the pros outweigh the cons. Speak with your physician today about starting a fitness routine to help improve your mind, body, and spirit!
